The Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet is a local organization that assists both cancer and non-cancer patients. It was established by Ruth Weber of Iron Mountain in 2001. The loan closet provides medical equipment at no charge, as well as financial assistance to cancer clients. The Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet is currently under the direction of President Diane Schabo, and is located at 201 E. Breitung Ave., Kingsford, MI 49802.
The loan closet offers $500 a year to assist a client for cancer-related prescriptions in Dickinson County and the surrounding area of Niagara, Florence, Spread Eagle and Aurora, WI. Also offered are Ensure, incontinence supplies and a mileage reimbursement of $750 a year for travel to out-of-town doctor's appointments and treatment.
The loan closet serves cancer patients by supplying hospital equipment in a home setting at no cost to the patient. Items provided included wheelchairs, over bed table, commodes, canes, walkers, shower chairs and incontinent supplies.
The loan closet is not funded by any organization or federal/state program. It is supported only through community funds and donations and is operated solely by volunteers. The loan closet is open from 1 0 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and after hours by making an appointment.
